03 hard starts when warm

Well my friends 03 has been having hard starts for few months now. When its cold fires up instantly, but after 5 minutes of running the next start is 15 20 seconds or more. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 cycles or the starter till it goes. Truck runs fine all of the timeonce it starts. Changed filters, put on a new lift pump monday, no help. There are no codes no other symptons just hard start hot. Truck is 03 305/555 6 speed 4x4 quad cab short bed stock 88k.

Yea i know, dont bust my stones too bad. I always ask and then think o why dont i do a search. I see most of them lead to the injectors, and some talk about the fca. If you hook up a scanner to the truck will it read the rail pressure? There arent any good diesel techs in any of our local dealers. Its under waranty so well find someone to run the injector test soon, down time is his only concern.

Not going to, I'm a nice guy

Yes, but depends on the scanner. Your best bet is to locate a rail pressure gauge instead though.

And yes, it seems to be injectors (which I am still not believing myself )

I no a tech really good at the chrystler jeep dealer in town, they dont mess with the diesel much tho. He has the fancy dealer scanner, when we had it on my o1 we could read all kinds of fancy number, would that one be capable? I dont know anyone with a rail pressure gauge, but ill make my freind buy one hes bombing his 07 and tryin to compete with my 99 toy.

If your on the cheap you can use a VOM to measure the rail pressure. If I remembered correctly should be around 1.35v during starting and idling.

I assume the wires to take that reading are on a sensor on the rail?

Yes, the rail pressure sensor is on the fuel rail just behind the intake horn.

Let me ask you this, when starting it: After it is warmed up, and you kill, then try to start it, do you hop in, and just try to start, OR, do you let the grid heater light go off?

Reason I ask is this: My truck started acting funny very shortly after I didmy Walbro 392 pump install. So, I thought that the filter housing was emptying.running fuel back to the tank. Because my truck used to start so awesome, ALL the time, I cold jsut hop in, even on a real cold moring, and not have to wait fo th egridheater light to go off, and it would fire rght up. But now, with the Walbro, I have to wait for the light to go off (and I am assuming, what is happening is the pump is filling the filter housing and building fuel pressure) and once it does that, it fires right up. IN other words, as long as I wait for the light to go off, my truck fires right up, every time. But, if I try and start it BEFORE the light goes off, it will crank for about5-7 seconds before it fires off.

Do you have a Walbro lift pump by any chance?
