DonM - 03/04.5 injector commonalities

Due to smoke and EGT issues, I'm going back to stock injectors. I have the chance to get my paws on some new 03 injectors, and I also happen to have some new 04.5 tips. I've been told that the only difference between the 04.5 and the 03 OEM sticks is the tips/nozzles, and that if the 04.5 nozzles are transplanted, they'll work fine on the 03 bodies. I called a Bosch shop, Cummins, and a Dodge tech I know tried to research, no joy - no one can answer the question. Anyone here know the answer? Or have a link to a source where I can find it?

How about asking Don M, I think it is. He repairs and sells injectors so might he have an answer for you, I don't but thought I'd suggest that.

Bob -
Spray angle is determined by the nozzle/tip, though, right? Or am I missing an aspect of the injector body that influences this?

Any chance can you get the injectors side by side for a visual?

Yep - the bodies measure out identically, including placement of the connector tube ports. Looks like it would work, and the RUMINT I got makes sense - as long as the internals are set up the same. And I'm not brave enough (nor equipped) to crack into the bodies to check that.

It sounds like that the tips are the only thing that is different

Just to make sure my intent is understood - I'm going to transplant 04.5 tips onto new 03 bodies, and put them in my 04.5 - not an 03.
I do know that the spray pattern issue is the main difference, read that it has to do with the combustion chamber shape, which was modified on the 04.5's from the 03's. I assume this is due to different piston top shaping......

I don't think that you can use 04.5 tips in an 03 - I found posts that said "bad things will happen".......
