`04 or `04.5

FIRST POST!

Bought a `04 to tow my crawler around about a week ago-this is my first Dodge, my first diesel . Power is awesome, can`t wait to toss an exhaust and intake on it....

which brings my to.....How can I ID my truck as an `04 or an `04.5???

I heard of there is a 305 or 325 sticker or casting under the black plastic "valve cover"...I didn`t see sheat! Where is this found? My truck still has the OEM exhaust, I also heard that `04.5`s have a 4" mandel bent downpipe and a cat too...

Looking at MBPR`s 5" turbo back, aFe`s stage II, and a smarty....
Thanks for yer help.

welcome to dtr

look under the truck. do you see a catalytic converter before the muffler? no=04, yes=04.5

drivers side front of the motor. on the side of the timing cover(not valve cover) there is a white and black sticker.

04.5 = 325 HP 610 ft lbs tq. (on sticker under valve cover) Made after Jan 04 = 04.5. Check the manufactures sticker inside the driver side door jam. 04.5's had the electronic wastegate also. Yes, they do have the 4" down pipe. The smarty is a good choice from what I have heard, I'm biased to the edge juice with attitude myself. Save your $ on the exaust, just buy a muffler delete pipe and run a straight pipe. It's loud, tho...

Actually the 04.5 is 325hp and 600ft/lbs of torque. Didn't get the 610ft/lb of torque until 05-06 time frame

I've wondered about that. I asked the mechanic at the dealer and he said that there was no difference. They simply upped the #s for the tq/hp wars.
I have no way of knowing if this is true or not though.

Hmmmm.... I'm gonna have to go look at my sticker... Coulda swore I saw 610. I'm not saying that I've never been wrong, before, either. (maybe that's just what I wanted... )

i didnt want to call out mark on his little mistake........ the 04.5's were 600ft, but when you took them in for reflashes for the white smoke, etc. you got the 610ft program(or so i was told). either way, 600ftlbs isnt enough!

What year do I upgrade to?

I think I'm ready to get a newer truck. I like my 01. It's pretty fast with the auto tranny but driving my dads 01 manual is a lot more fun. I could use the room from a real full four door. I want a white shortbed 6 speed. From the specs above it seems like the 04s to 05s are what I should look for. From 03-06 what are some opinions on the best year and manual tranny? Do any of them have problems I should watch out for? Thanks
