Whining noise - like mud tires going down the road.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I live on dirt roads and this just started about 1 month ago but it is already louder. Can any one help? Has anyone ran into this?
You can hear this noise starting at 25-30 mph and up. It doesn't vary much with speed though.
I have rotated my tires and I still hear it. Is is the rear end?
I have a 02 Dodge ram diesel.
I am a girly girl so please speak in girl car lauguage-LOL (I don't know anything about cars)
Thanks!!!!

does it only make the noise when accelerating or when you are coasting? Most likly it is either a bearing in your rear end or ringgear and pinnion which is also in the rear end.

Does the noise go away when you depress the clutch peddle?
Also, fill your signature with your truck info so we all can see what you're driving.

sounds to me like a carrier and pinion bearing on there way out, (rear end bearings)
my old halfton did this, vibrated the nut loose driving down the road and i lost the drive shaft. OOF. Good luck.

The Noise Only Stops When I Stop Rolling In Or Out Of Gear. No Change In Noise If I Put The Clutch In Either Unless I Stop Or Get Under 20 Miles Per H. I Have An 02 Ram 2500 Deisel. What Do Ya'll Think The Est. Cost On That Would Be And How Long Till It Leaves Me Stranded? Is Is Something That I Need To Fix Asap?

Certianly does sound like a rear differential issue. To rebuild a rear end I think you're looking at around $200 to $300 for parts (if just a ring & pinion & bearing kit are needed) and around $300 to $400 for labor. If the ring & pinion are ok and just bearings are needed, labor is the same, but parts will probably only be around $150 to $200.

You know......The more I think about it, have you checked the front wheel hubs? The front wheel hubs are a common failure item on these trucks.

Do the "newer" trucks with a Club Cab have the two piece driveshaft like my '96 does? If so, maybe the carrier bearing is on its way out? This assumes that this is a Club (i.e. extended) Cab we're talking about.

Did the noise move frt to back or vise/versa when you rotated the tires?
Is there any cupping( high and low ) spots on the tires?
If the tires are cupped you will have a noise until they smooth out.

If your on a paved road and your steer left and right kind of rocking the vehicle does the noise change. If so its probably the frt wheel bearings. The extended cab's also have a steady bearing on the drive shaft that could cause the noise but these noise's do sound different from one and other. Living on a dirt road I would suspect the frt wheel bearings but kind of need to know what year your truck is and what model...2 wheel drive or 4x4.
I think some people here are jumping the gun thinking the noise is in the rear end. I really think it's the frt hub and bearing assembly on one side.
Good luck

If its a 4X4 do you have any oil left in your transfer case? It doesn't take much to begin with and a small leak can put it dangerously low. If the output shaft is wet its leaking and you wouldn't notice on gravel.
