several years ago i was pulling my 5ver across nevada. about the time i got to the middle of the state, i ran out of fuel... i thought my vp44 had died, as my fuel guage still read 3/8. it cost around 100 dollars for a tow ... after i put a new sender in the tank, i never run down to a 1/4

I run about 450 miles and put in 26-27 gallons. But, the light doesn't come on. I'm currently installing a 60 gallon tank and hoping to get 55 usable gallons. The footprint of the tank is so large that a mere 1" of fuel is a touch over 4 gallons. Took my time and "V" cut the new draw straw to within 1/4" - 3/8" above the bottom.

How is everyone getting the mileage numbers? Put X amount of gallons of fuel and then run to the low fuel light comes on? Then calculate mileage to figure out there MPG?

These days, I can't AFFORD to let the fuel light come on... I fill up just after half tank and it still costs me $60-$65!

Mine comes on about 6 gallons in the tank.

Filler up, reset your trip odometer (the mechanical one) drive a distance then refill the tank and divide the miles driven on the trip meter by the gallons you put back in. Don't trust your overhead or the gas gage to tell you amounts or mileage- they are both always off by a large enough percentage to give you false readings.

I used to fill the tank up into the neck- till it hit the filler pipe vent so I could see the level and be sure it was the same each time- until I had to replace the sender in the tank- have never been able to get it to seal well enough to hold that much fuel since.

Mine has come on once and it only took 26 gallons to fill. That leaves about 9 in the tank.

But... it's a big tank. One member stated that 1 gallon of fuel only makes for less than 1/4" of fuel level!

I'm one of those freakish people that doesn't like to see the needle under 1/2 tank, though!

Mine stays on. Working on the steering then the FASS. I'll fix the guage when the tank comes down.

In my 98 the fuel light comes, dings, and the gauge goes to zero
on and off pretty much constantly; as the tank gets down, it pretty much
stays on, with the gauge reading empty...so I usually am filling up at about
26 gallons...guess it keeps me outta trouble!

My fuel warning light has been on for the last 120,000 miles or so. Since the sending units have notoriously been known to fail, I've refused to put another one in. But, if I can remember back to when it was working I think the light would come on when I had somewhere between 6-8 gallons left.

Mine usually comes on at about $110. If I drive fairly conservatively, my needle moves off full at 100miles, hits 3/4 tank at 200 miles, is half at 300 miles, 1/4 at 400 miles, fuel light on at 500 miles (1/8 tank), and I'm walking at 600 miles. That's if I drive like I actually bought it, not stole it like I usually drive.... That's about 17mpg, or 4 miles per dollar....

mine comes on right at a 1/8 of a tank but I don't let it get that low any more, now I fill up before it gets to a 1/4 or 550 miles.

do these trucks have a reserve once the distance to empty is at 0km or the needle has no more room to fall?
The light shows up quite early on mine, I can easily go 100km after the light comes on and I've gone 20km past when the DTE guage reads empty.

YA I like to live on the edge....
