What's in the box under center of seat

Howdy fellers, I've had something draining my batteries for the last couple weeks. I have tracied it down to the box under center seat. Its pulling just about 1/2 amp. I am not sure that is enough to actully kill 2 batteries overnight, or if my cheap wal-mart batteries are taking a dump. If I unplug the box the batteries do stay up. Does anybody know how much there seat is pulling off the batteries? I measured mine by hookig fluke meter between positive batt post and cable, with doors closed key off pulled .48Amp, unplugged box and amps dropped to .01A. Anybody got an thoughts on this?

Thank
Jed

I think that's the inertial seat belt locking thingy.
Locks the seat belts if you're in a crash, or bumpy road.

Not sure but I'm thinking it is the air bag module. Someone else should chime in soon.

I always thought the air bag module was up under the dash on top of the transmision hump?

Thats why I'm not sure. I have seen the SRS logo where you talking about. I can look in the manual when I get home but someone who actually knows will probably answer by then.

The seat belts are self contianed though.

Phox is correct that is the seat belt control module used in an extended or quad cab with the seat belts intigrated into the seatbacks and it does control the lock activation. Sound like yours is trying to activate for some false reason.
I would look for someone to swap in a known good control to see if yours is bad and if not then check for shorted wireing . Have fun and good luck let us know how it comes out! Rattlerbob

Everytime the batteries are unhooked and reconnected the module will remain active for awile. Best to due the amperage draw test using a shunt so that proper amperage is supplied to the active modules. Hook your test meter up and the shunt then wait for 10 min or so. That should be enough time for it to "time out" and it will if working correctly. By the way they only used that module for one model year. The CTM took over the belt duties after that.

I checked under the center front seat and there is nothing electrical there. I don't remember having anything there in my 96 either. The only wires are to the seatbelt switch. Possibly it's an aftermarket item.

Thanks guys, I knew had to do with the seat belts, I'll try the shunt deal see if I'm actully looking in the wrong spot, maybe just bad batteries. What I can't figure is why it would need any power at all when the truck is not running, no key in the ignition. I wish it was just Mr. Hoffa in there puttin 2 wires together I'd just throw him out.

So what year was it used in?
I have a 99 QC and just got a complete set of 2001 QC seats for my 96. Both seat sets seem to have the same wiring and box under the console.

Any light you can shed on this module, such as maybe a wiring diagram, would be appreciated. I am still trying to get the integrated seat belts in the 2001 seats to work properly. I can get the passenger seat working OK, but the driver's seat locks after you pull the seatbelt out about 12 inches. Got no idea why this happens.

Thanks,
Chris

'98 was the only year I know of they were used.
This includes both the 12 valve and 24 model.
They often fail and are a source of battery drain.
Can't remember exactly but recall a new module from the dealer was about $80.

Chris - I have a '02 driver's seat in my truck, with NO wiring hooked to it at all, and the reel works perfectly. I suspect you have something wrong with the inertia reel.

As I was told, this stupid seat belt module was only used in '98... I'm finishing up the bypass of mine today, for the passenger seat, which is still a '98 seat.
