Actual axle nut size

XLR8ER,

I just replaced my right front hub/bearing assemby and had to get a new socker for it too. The correct size is 1 11/16 inch. This nut is torqued on to 175 ft lbs so I bought an impact socket of that size and it worked great.

Something else that REALLY helped is to use the trucks power steering to help push the hub out of the steering knuckle. Do the following after you've removed the brake caliper and four (4) bolts that hold the hub to the steering knuckle.

Start by positioning the axle shaft u-joints so the inner u-joint is verticle (outer u-joint is horizontal). Then select a fairly large (1 inch or so) socket that's about 1 1/2 to 2 inch long, insert it between the outer u-joint yoke and the axle tube on the rearward side of the tube. Start the truck's engine. If you're replacing the driver's side hub, turn the steering wheel to the left. Conversely, if you're replacing the passenger's side do the same above and turn the steering wheel to the right. If you do a search here on "hub bearing" there's a web article that has pictures and more details on this procedure. It sure saved me a LOT of time. Hope this helps.

Chris,

I forgot to mention one other thing. After you've removed the hub the axle shaft needs to be supported so it puts as little weight on the axle seal as possible. Otherwise you'll wind up distorting the seal and will be leaking axle fluid as you drive. Even with my precaution of doing this mine distorted slightly for about a week before its shape was restored, as evidenced by some fluid leakage slung on the inner sidewall of that side's tire. From what I've read, replacing these seals isn't much fun.

Also, it helps a lot to have another person in the truck to turn the steering wheel while you are at the vehicle wheel so you can keep the socket positioned between the u-joint yoke and axle tube and catch the hub as it pops loose.
