What to look for in used Cummins Ram?

Re:What to look for in used Cummins Ram?
If you see a oily/greasy mess on the front of the engine, it is prob. the KDP has busted the housing. When I bought mine it had this goop all over the front of the timing housing. I thought it was the crankshaft seal But it wasn't . Also, I have the NV4500 tranny and the syncros are out of 2nd gear,or so this is what I have been told was the prob., but you are looking at an auto so yhis wouldn't apply. Good luck looking, and beware of the bomb disease.

Re:What to look for in used Cummins Ram?
I just found a 2000 CTD Quad Cab 4X2 within 15 miles of me for 14,900. The truck seems to be in real good shape for having that many miles. The leather is a little scuffed on the drivers side, but the rest of the interior is perfect. The radio and power mirrors dont work, but I think if might be a fuse.
It has 163,000 miles on it, but it runs and drives great. What do I need to look for, besides the transmission? i know I don't have to worry about the KDP, but what else is there? Also does this truck have the smaller turbo than the 12 valve engines? There is a little leak under the engine, but nothing dripping or major. I think it sounds like a winner, but my fiancee thinks "oh my GOD, 163,000 miles, and a leak :'(" Whatever.
Thanks again guys
Mike

Be sure to look the front end over very closely. These trucks are known for having front suspension problems. Just a little bit to go on; I bought my truck and ended up putting $800 into the front of it alone. So do be careful and if you can have someone put it on a lift for your at least get the front tires off the ground and put a bar uder the tire and lift up. If there is any movement you may have a bad ball joint(s) and they are not cheap!!! Good luck. 163,000 miles isn't too bad as long as there isn't much rust.

Sometimes the oily mess at the front of the engine is nothing more than what the engine drools out the breather tube. You'll just have to look and make sure it's not one of the problems listed above.
