What Does You Ram Charge At?

My 96 Ram seems to charge kind of high to me. The gauge needle is about in the middle of the 13 and 18 which has got to be close to 15 volts. That seems high to me. Also, I seem to get a lot of acid on the top of my drivers side battery. Is that normal? I JUST put brand new Interstate Mega Tron Plus batteries and havent run it around very much to see if the acid problem still exsists.

My volt gauge(stock one) on my 99 goes from 8 to 18. I believe 10-16 are the volts that are in the "indicated area" by the line, and my meter will show 14.5, around there during the winter. During the summer it only reads around 13 I believe.

If it's cold, it will charge higher to help warm up the batteries. There is a bat temp sender under one of the batteries. Pass side I think.

At -25C, the alternator on ours indicates 15 volts, sometimes a little higher. The cold, intake heaters/fuel heater REALLY does a number on the batteries and the charging system. Just normal for this time of year. Regarding the corrosion, I'd wash the whole area really well and you can get some dressing that will keep the corrosion at a bay.

The older(94-98)2nd Gen trucks do not have sensors under the batteries.

On mine now that its colder out it will charge at around 13.6-14.0 depending on when and how its started. When you first light it off and it finishes cycling the grid heaters its around 14 and after you drive it a while it runs normally at 13.6..........Andy

My truck does have a little button type sensor that sits into the drivers side battery tray that the battery sits on. I probably should get some of the dressing to help keep down the corrosion. I've got a newer set of Custom Battery Cables and i'd hate for them to get ruined by the corrosion.

Andy, you might have just missed seeing the sensor.
Easy to miss, the sensor is just a spring loaded plastic button about the size of a dime.

You should run a little over 15 volts for the first 5 minutes of run time, and then drop back to around 14.7 for the next 10 minutes. Then the PCM will take the ambient air temp sensor and varyu the voltage according to the outside temp. On a 45 degree day your voltage should be around 14.1-14.5. On a 95 degree day your voltage should be anywhere from 12.6-13.3. The PCM will vary the voltage widely with temperatures based on ambient air temps after the first 15 minutes. The first 15 minutes of run time on a cold start is meant to heat the batteries to temperature.

Bill..
A looky see thru the factory service manual tonite said "battery sensor,if equipped,is located under the battery and is a button."Some models are not equipped with the sensor and those have a button plug there instead".Hmm,I learned something tonite as the 96 my buddy was working on had one but upon removal of my left battery there was none,go figure,Ma Mopar at her finest.......Andy
