Vacuum Pump failed....

My local ******* told me that my vacuum pump is leaking engine oil. I said ok fix it. Then they came back with a $1300.00 bill. The pump alone is $1050.00 what a rip... Has anyone else had this problem.

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

The belt driven vacuum pump on my Furd died about a year ago. A whopping $65 later I had brakes again!

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

that item isn't covered by warranty is it. I 've looked at the vacuum pumps and theres not that much to leak oil. Never had one go bad yet and have had over 125k on each truck. you might want to double check that price try the cummins dealer
Hey guys, great site here.

Mine started to leak last spring. At first I thought the bottle was overflowing. Turned out to be the pump, which was covered under the extended warranty.

TO

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

The seal that leaks oil in the vacumn pump isn't serviced by Dodge. I remember a post on TDR where a member tracked down the proper part # and fixed the leak using only the seal and silicone. Don't remember for sure but seems like he had to order andpay ~$20.00 for a $3.00 seal but saved him from buying a new or rebuilt pump. The newer CTD's have hydroboost brakes so unless you need vacumn for a exhaust brake, the Ford electric/vacumn pump would allow the stock pump to be eliminated. HTH's, Larry

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

yea, mine went out at about 12k. Dealer replaced it AND oiled the whole front side of engine compartment for me! Dont know about removing and tossing the vaccum pump as it is on a line shaft with the power steering pump. Would have to look closely at whole assembly to see if that was possible. I am not sure which pump is in front, Power Steering or Vaccum.

Duane.

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

The post you are referring to stated that if you had trouble with the powersteering pump, you could just buy a standard GM power steering pump to replace the unit. Just reuse the old pumps 'back' and be carefull with the seal. If you needed a seal for the vacume pump, he said a National # 28X38X7 C/R#10924 or a NAPA#47676 would do. I ran to my service manual and wrote this down the first time I read it. I hope it pans out for you.

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

Wow, guess I had a good dealer. My vac. pump started leaking at around 80,000 miles. My dealer replaced it under the 100,000 mile engine warranty. Said it was engine oil getting past a seal so engine warranty covered it.

Gene

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

From the old post on the TDR - copied into a file on my computer -

The seal for the vacuum pump is a 38mm od x 28mm id x 7mm thick with double lip viton material.
I got one @ NAPA- Chicago Rawhide # 10924 - O ring is 55 x 59 X 2mm

Hope this helps.

Thought the vacuum pump was gone on my 96. NAPA had a rebuild for $386 or so but it was for the 24V motors. Only place to find a 12V pump was D/C for about $700 at shop cost. Mine turned out to be a broken vacuum line fitting at the cruise canister (whew!).

Re:Vacuum Pump failed....

I had mine fail also, got the seal and replaced it. Not a bad job to do and $10 verses $1000 by the dealer is easier to handle... Check out this link I posted on Dieselram on how to do it. Hope this helps, Lon

http://dieselram.com/cgi-bin/ultimat...c;f=3;t=000360
