using a gps for odometer reading

Are there any gps units that will record the trip miles and hold them in memory until reset manually?

My problem; I have a 98 dodge cummins, I have checked the mile posts and they are sort 1/10 mile.
I am getting from 10 to 14 mpg.
My speedometer doesn't start working until it reaches 30 mph. we replaced the gear ont the automatic transmission and it still is not fixed.
I used the gps over a 15mile trip and the odometer came up 4 miles short
I was hoping to find a gps that will record the trip mileage and hold it in its memory until it's reset.

Thanks ,

Tom

Almost all Gps's do what you ask.
I use mine for that all the time.

I have a Garmin 350 and it does what you want. It also records moving time and stopped time, max speed and average speed.

Hi There!

you likely need to replace the VSS on top of the differential in order to fix your issue with the speedometer not registering - at least that worked for my 1999.

That being said, I agree with the others that most of the current flock of GPS units will keep accurate track of your odometer functions as well as many others should you wish to set it up to do so. I use an older Magellan unit on my motorcycle because the OEM speedometer is out by anywhere from 10 to 15 KPH depending on actual speed - very aggravating to say the least. I also use a Garmin in the truck just in case I need to verify or locate an address in an unfamiliar city.

Cheers!

Mike

I have had an old Magellan 315 GPS on my dash since I bought my truck new.

You can still find them on Ebay for $30-40 and they work awesome for speed, odometer and trip. The odometer and trip are resettable when YOU want them reset.

It's a simple unit with a whole bunch of great features that are configurable they way you want them, speed, bearing, heading, metric/imperial measure, plotting routes, compass, etc, etc. If I remember right, there are 7 or 8 different screens to use. I have the one screen set up for speed, time, heading and elevation and that is really all I use. The odo/trip are used for mileage during trips and fuel consumption.

I'm so use to using it for speed that I don't ever look at the factory speedometer anymore.

Great little old unit for cheap that works great. The dash mounts and power cords are all still available on Ebay. About $100 should get you everything you need.

ditto, the GPS I love and also was nice to help recalibrate my correct speeding using my gps and smarty when I have went to larger tires. most GPS's will allow you to save multiple trips on certain routes also. this is nice to see when your MPG have changed at all during the same routes. and they are simple plug and play. I think mine has a 5 hour charge life if I take it out and use it or lend it to a friend etc. if you want a new one last I looked Cosco had decent deals too.

The mile markers are accurate. If you have bigger tires than originals you will register less miles than you actually travel.
