Trailer Lights - Problem Found!

A few days ago I posted a question about common failure points in the trailer/rear light wiring. I have had to remove the fuse for the trailer lights because a short somewhere was causing my brake lights to stay on all of the time.

Last night I had the truck on a hoist to do a few miscellaneous repairs and found the source of my problems.

The main wiring harness for the rear lights and trailer hook-up was pinched between the spare tire and the rear cross-member. The corrugated plastic was worn through on the tire side and the cross-member side. Several wires were showing copper and one or two were completely severed.

It's nothing that a few hours, some solder and double-wall shrink tubing can't fix... but I'm not looking forward to sitting under my truck in the snow to do it!

Just thought I'd put this out there... might be worth checking on your truck to avoid getting stuck with no rear lights or trailer brakes!
