Track bar Question

I replaced the track bar on my truck. I went with the Moog Problem Solver unit. After installing the new bar I still have a slight movement (mostly up and down) in the ball and socket end. Is this normal? The movement is less then 50 thousands as near as I can tell.

ANY movment is bad, but lateral movement is really all you should be worried about. The track bar's job is to locate the axle laterally, so this is the direction where stability matters most.

The up-and-down movement is really only relevant if it allows lateral movement.

There should be NO MOVEMENT from side-to side. Even a slight about will cause wander.

My DT Pro Fab bar is working out very well. It's tight as a drum.

Hohn, thanks for the response. The reason I asked, this is my second Moog track bar. The first one had more play than this one. I am trying to get my truck to pass a safety inspection and after putting on the first Moog track bar, the inspection shop would not pass it. I guess I have to try again. One more and I will be able to do this with my eyes closed!!!

I guess I should have spent the money for a DT track bar.

Maybe I'm just lucky. I've still got my original, 73K mile track bar on my truck. Even with the lift, it's still hanging in there solid.

I put my DT Profab bar on tonight and this thing has ZERO PLAY. It single handedly took allt he play out of the steering. I hated to spend the $375 but now I know the truck will never go into death wobble again. This is one of those things where you spend the money now and be problem free later on. Install was a breeze. It took me about an hour and a half in the dark with only a little shop light. The holesaw bit I had was really sharp so it made cutting holes int he crossmember really easy. Now I'm happy I spent all that cash.

SWC,

While the Profab trackbar is good, take a look at these guys:

http://www.solidsteel.ca/DSS.htm

They also offer a kit that uses a bracket and an 03 trackbar. If you go this way youll probably never have to replace a trackbar again.

Shipping will be less and you'll bypass customs brokerage since they are in Sask.

Hey Dr Evil

The right addy for the DSS bracket and the new Track bar bracket is www.solidsteel.biz the one you posted is not connected with this company anymore,I live not far away from these guys and that is my understanding, you are absolutly right about not having to replace a track bar ever again once this new track bar bracket is installed which allows one to use the 03 track bar, been running both the DSS steering bracket and the new Track-bar bracket with a 03 track bar, truck drives like a cadilac.

Correct, solidsteel biz.

They also don't sell direct anymore, but have a list of distributors in Canada as well as down here in the lower 48.

Just called Rip today and ordered my DSS, should be here by the weekend.
Now if the weather would cooperate, as my truck doesn't quite fit in the garage to install it.

I'll toss in my guess and say no as well.

I also asked Rip about the Trac Bar kit on a lifted truck and he said "not at this time",
leading me to believe that perhaps they are working on a solution for us with "real" trucks.

Dr. Evil I talked to the distributer of the DSS track bar and kicked it around. Maybe I am too cheap, but I did not want to spend the money on the 03 track bar from DC. If an after market track bar was available I would have gone with the Solid Steel conversion. The Moog bar was cheaper and from what I read here and elsewhere a better replacement then the DC track bar.

I may regret it yet.

there is a kit called a lukes link. It replaces the ball joint end of a STOCK trackbar. It won't fit a moog. I have used this kit and it drives just like it did new. Zero play. I'm not sure of the price, but shipped and everything was under 80. It took about an hour to put on and was reall easy to install. You won't ever have to replace your trackbar again.

http://www.lukeslink.com/

The dss is also a good kit and it stops alot of wondering.

That is mostly for 2wd or trucks that have settled. If it does hit, just grind a little off the outer casing.
