tires wearing too fast??

in early january i put a set of 285/75R16 super swamper trxus radials on and after 5K miles the rears have worn far quicker than the fronts.......im not sure if this is a question of wrong tire pressure or not???? the fronts are fine and i always thought all that weight up there meant they would be the ones to wear quick........? and no i havent been doin burnouts all day long thanks in advance for any help

Rears wearing faster doesn't make sense,
but,

Is the wear even?

If it is a tire pressure issue, they'd wear more on the outside if underinflated, inside if overinflated.

Have you been towing heavy?

Guess you need to start rotating them every 1,000 miles

phox

Re:tires wearing too fast??

it seems they are wearing a bit more in the center.....i guess i shouldve put what psi i run in my post, sorry. when i got them the tire shop inflated them to about 35 psi. This seemed like way to low me especially since it bounced all over the road like a minivan the rear came out around every turn so i put them at 60, is this too much????????? the max is 80 ???

Re:tires wearing too fast??

You'd think a tire shop would know how much air to put in them.
35 seems quite a bit low for an 80 psi max tire.

I run my stock tires, which also have an 80psi max rating, at 65 front and 55 rear.

This seems to be the best compromise between ride quality and tire wear.
Only rotated once at 10,000 and am currently at 15,000.
They all look exactly the same, wear wise.

I'm getting 315's this weekend and might have to change how much I put in, as they are 50psi max I think.

Re:tires wearing too fast??

If your truck is empty most of the time I wouldnt run much more than 45 to 50 PSI in the rears. Sometimes if the rims are to narrow for the tire you will get premature wear on the centers of the tires.

When you look at the max tire pressure on a tire it is directly related to the load of the tire as well so at 80 PSI it may have a load rating of 2800 lbs for example and thats the weight it can carry at that pressure which is probably way more that what the truck in the rear actually weights.

You should reduce the pressure and find a compromise where the tire rides good will minimal rebound and minimal wondering at highway speeds without causing premature wear on the center of the tire.

Good Luck

P.S With proper tire pressure and rotating on a regular basis I was able to get 120 000 MILES on the stock Michelin LTX's that came with my truck..

Re:tires wearing too fast??

I've got 33x12.50 BFG MT's on mine and the tire ware is awesome for a mud tire. I only run 40psi in the rear and 50psi in the fronts. You've got to rotate mud tires more often than AT's. I rotate mine every 2,500 miles, always front to back, I never cross my tires and they wear great. I've got close to 30K on this set. 8) the only down side to the 40psi is when towing you gotta air them up to around 55 or 65 depending on the load. I've also got 9.75" wide Welds to run them on as well.

DB
Re:tires wearing too fast??

My 2WD 96 has been through one set of rear tires and halfway through the second and I'm just getting ready to change the fronts out at 60K miles. No rotation because it has been evident that the rears were wearing faster than the front from the time I got the truck. I am running E-rated Uniroyal road tires and most of the time the bed is empty so rear slippage is obvious at times (my foot just seems to like pushing the pedal a little harder than it should sometimes).

You would think that the weight of the motor would wear the fronts alot faster. Alot depends on the tire compound hardness and whether it is designed to take heat like a semi tire. A set of C-rated Hoosier A/Ts on my brothers 77 W200 hasn't lasted near as long as the D-rated BFG A/Ts on my 78 W200.

Keep the tires aired to about 75% of max for unloaded and run them up to max for loaded and it should help the wear.

Re:tires wearing too fast??

I've got the same issue with tire wear (see sig for tires and wheels). Within a week of buying mine, the rears started showing signs of wear . I've got about 13,000 on mine now and have rotated them 3, if not 4 times. As far as tire pressure, I run mine pretty low compared to others. I messed with front and rear pressures and the higher I go the faster they wear. From now on I'm going to try to force myself to buy tires on treadwear and not looks. Swampers look so good though ;D

Re:tires wearing too fast??

FYI,

I'm running the original Michelins "E's" that I ordered with the truck, new. I rotate the tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles and have 54 K on the truck now and still have some tread left. Towed a 30 ft. 5ver all over out West for 8 K miles last Summer. I keep the inflation close to specs., ride is a little rougher, but tires are holding up fine!!!

I'll buy another set of Michelins when these need replacing.

Good Luck!!!

smokinjoe
ohio

Re:tires wearing too fast??

My factory michlins aren't holding up worth a crap. I only have 36000 on and my rears are about shot my fronts have just shy of half the tread left. What was really weird is that my outside dual seems to were a lot faster. When I am loaded I have about 55 all the way around, and empty I drop my rear down to about 35. I don't know
Heath

Re:tires wearing too fast??

Mine are starting to wear to...might have something to do with the squealing noise I keep hearing and the fish tailing I feel when I pop the clutch and let her rip, never mind the smell of burning rubber. AH but it feels so good, however it does cost in the long run...

Re:tires wearing too fast??

i thought that the rears would always wear faster than the front tires
because most of the time all the power is going though them
(except in 4wheel drive)
