Tailgate cables

So I snapped both cables on my tailgate this weekend while I was trying to unload my friends GSXR (~450lbs crotch rocket)

Does anyone know how strong these cables are supposed to be? Im starting to think that they were slightly rusted from their age and they just broke

Re:Tailgate cables

I've loaded my '76 H-D (apprx 650#) with the ramp resting on the edge of they tailgate several times.
Sounds like the were weak.

Re:Tailgate cables

Hi
I think this is my 1st Post, so bear with me. A friend of mine, that talked me into buying my truck, by the way thanks.
The 1st thing he told me to do when I got my truck was silicone the ends of the cables because salt gets in and rust it. Thanks to all for all the info I got over the last 2 years!!
Re:Tailgate cables

I've seen these aftermarket ones on Ebay for quite a while. Don't know how good they are. They look allright though. Probably cheaper than the dealer. Tailgate Cables

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly it was around $35.00 for the pair.

Re:Tailgate cables

Both of mine snapped on my 3500, never really had anything heavy on the tail gate other than a person or two at times. I was thinking of trying the ones on ebay but haven't got around to it yet

Re:Tailgate cables

I wanted to make some metal straps to hold it instead of the wires. My grandpa has them on his 93 Chevy and a friend of mine has them on his 75 Ford.
Re:Tailgate cables

Don't know if they would work or not on our 2nd and 3rd gen (haven't looked real close yet) but the older Dodge trucks have the metal strap hangers.

No telling how much weight I have had on mine over the years. They do rattle around back there though.

Re:Tailgate cables

Both of mine broke. They broke at the bend, inside the sleave, where you wouldn't know they were bad. Until you jump up on the tailgate and you get a big surprise.

Terry

Re:Tailgate cables

I've loaded my old sportsman 500 with a 185 pound buck on the rack before and they held.750lbs.quad+190lbs.me+185lbs.deer=1125lbs.

I've also had them break while riding up the ramps.
I checked Autozone, napa, autoworks and the dealer. The dealer was cheapest and the only one that had 'em in stock.
