Surface rust - what to do?

This is all useful information for me. I have used the Permatex Rust Treatment spray all the time, and all I do is spray all over the rust, including painted / rusty spots. The stuff gets under the paint, reacts with rust and leaves glossy, hard, dry and quite dark surface. I have not had rust reappear after this treatment but I keep a close watch. My old Toyota had small rust holes on the corner of the trunk from the previous owner, and after I sprayed it, that was the end of the rust: stopped, never spread again.

Theres the phosporic acid / zinc treatment that etches the rust and leaves a white zinc coating and theres some other stuff Ive seen here and there that does what you mention and turns it black. Ive got no idea whats in it, but it reeks pretty bad
The MSDS for one of those types just says some acids and a vinyl acrylic. Im interested to see if theres any comparison sites out there that have done weather studies of both types

What I was looking for was something that doesn't look like a black spot just in the rust area. Either body color (silver) or get truck bed coating along the whole rocker panel - front to rear. Anyway, thanks.

So the proper procedure is to sand down the rusty spots, apply the product and then paint over top? I have rust starting behind the left rear quarter panel. Also can you paint over that black stuff like the Permatex or Wynns Extend?

I've used POR-15 on my camaro, used a wire wheel to take down most of the rust, then put on the acid stuff to eats the rest of the rust, wash it off with water, dried everything perfectly and painted with the paint it comes with.
Been 6 years and still not a sign of rust. You should beable to paint it after the POR-15 cures.
