Stuck fuel level gauge

Stuck fuel level gauge
Hello. Stock fuel level gauge with roughly half a tank of fuel. Yesterday it measured accurately. Today the gauge registers above full. Every time the ignition/electrical system is keyed on, the gauge rises to above full. No change in fuel level after driving 150 miles.
I'm not up on electrical systems. It doesn't seem to me like a tank-float problem, since the tank wasn't filled. Tried banging the bottom of the tank - no luck. Sending unit? Is it inside the tank? Relay? Bad wiring connection?
What would cause the gauge to read "more than full" than simply dead and below empty?

Mine did the same thing last week after I filled it up. This has happened 5 times since owning this truck. The other times it fixed itself and the low fuel light and chime would still work but there not working either now

Same problem w/my 99 24v. Been warrantied repaired numerous times, now have 125k on her, stuck for now, i expect it to stay stuck for several fill ups, and then she'll start working again.

When you intall the new module, it is important that the float arm is somewhat centered in the tank. Mine did this at first when I put in a new one.
If it is turned and rubbing the side of the tank, it can hang up.
You can loosen the big plastic nut and try turning it a little.

When my friend's '97 stuck on full under warranty the service writer laid on his back, kicked the tank and told him not to fill the tank to the brim anymore.
Gauge is reading fine ten years later.
Rubber mallet works just as well as a boot.
