speedometer in my 98
took off this evening and noticed my speedometer was sitting on "0" and i'm doing about 55. no problems before now.
turned the switch off and restarted the truck, no help.
i tried the cruise control, it works.
is it time to replace the cluster or, is there something else wrong?
'98 24 valve, auto. extended cab/short bed.

check your vss on the side of the tranny im not sure how common it is for the 2nd gen trucks but have had a buddy with a 1st gen and driving down the road and his vss (vehicle speed sensor) got loose and his gauge stopped working so went to his house and figured out thats all it was and works like a charm now!

had the same problem a few weeks ago. Get a multi meter and test the lugs going to the ABS/VSS sensor on the rear axle, i had a faulty plug on the truck end of the little wireing harness. i cut it out of the loop and just hard wired the plug for the vss directly to the truck, so now there is only one plug instead of two. works like a charm.

Yep, the speed sensor on your rear pumpkin, or the wiring to it, is bad.
When you buy a new speed sensor, it comes with an upgraded pigtail to replace the one on the truck.

just to echo most everyone else, its the sensor in the rear. The sensor on the side of the tranny near as I can tell only controls shifting as I have also had that one go out in my truck. All the gauges worked fine except it would not shift out of first (automatic)

if it's the speed sensor, then why did my cruise work?
got up the next morning to go to work and it's working fine now. don't really like these things that break and then fix them selfs.

my guage sticks some times mostly because the guy the took my dash apart to install my xm and stereo system didnt align everything perfectly during reassembly(my shift indicator is like half a space off too) but i give it a slight tap and it starts working fine. . but i agree there are far to many things that "fix" themselve while bumping down the road or when the struck sits for a while.

Dont think that its "fixed itself". Replace it. Mine went right out before I had to take a 600mi trip. When id hit a bump or something the spedo would work for a few miles then cut back out.
