Speedo gear drive assembly question
Truck is a 1996 3500 CC 2wd 5 speed and I've removed a broken Gear Vendors overdrive and putting the truck back to stock. Due to missing parts, I'm having to replace almost the whole speedo drive assembly.
My question is this - How is the speedometer gear retained in the black plastic adapter housing? Is there some sort of keeper or clip or whatever to prevent the gear from just sliding out of the adapter?
Thanks

Randy, I looked in my service manual for you. According to to installation instructions and the dwg they provide, the "speedometer pinion" simply slides into the "speedometer adapter"and the assembly installs into the housing on the trans. there appears to be no retainer other than the one used to hold the entire assembly to the tranny. they do say to count the# of teeth on the pinion and rotate the housing once installed so that the corrosonding #'s on the adapter are at the 6:00 position.tighte the clamp and the screw for the sending unit and reconnect the wires. I guess the gear cannot fall into the trans.there must be a pilot in there. Hope this helps, good luck.

green95,
Thanks for your efforts.
I found out why the gear would just fall out of the adapter housing. It was'nt manufactured properly. I found a used adapter housing in a wrecking yard and when I slid the speedo gear into it, it snapped in and stayed put. There is a detent that the speedo gear engages inside the adapter housing. The new housing I bought from the local Dodge dealer did not have this detent.
Thanks again,
Cheers
