RE-PIN headlight rotory switch so the bed light comes on B4 interior lights?

i really hate it when im driving down the highway at NIGHT, and there might be something flopping around in the bed and i want to see what it may be....

so i reach for the rotary switch on the dash, and rotate it upward to turn on the light to shine in the bed... and i cant see a daam thing in the bed due to the glare from the interior lights on the back window >

who really can see a darned thing in the bed with that glare???

so anyway, ive never had the headlight switch out or apart, could i just repin the connector so that the outside light comes on before the interior lights?

this is one thing i really have wanted to do since i bought the truck, i just dont drive it everyday

thanks
BW

I don't see why you can't do that. I just had my switch apart to fix the driving/fog lights. If you do re-pin your plug, post which wires you moved. I would like to do the same to my switch, but don't have the time right now to figure out which to move.

I don't know why they went away from the separate switch for the cargo lites like in the 1st gens. I really like being able to turn on the lite without having anything else on. I contemplated hardwiring my 96 truck with a separate switch.

I'm kinda partial to having it the way it is.
You can't forget to turn it off 'cuz the dome light is on to remind you.
Have you ever had to follow someone down the road at night when they forgot to turn the bed light off?
I have.
VERY hard to see with the glare.

I think shovelhead hit on exactly why they changed it.

My book does not give me colors, but it gives wire numbers. According to it if you swap wire #20yl (I think it means 20 ga. yellow) with 22pk (22 ga pink) you will have the results that you want. These wires are by the headlight swich.

I show the same term id's and my book shows pk as pink and yl as yellow and it mentions thta the 22 or 20 would bve gauge.

A - 2 - 18 -LB/YL
main ckt ID - part of main ckt- Gauge - Pri color/stripe

Ditto on all that tom said and my little chart above. ;D

The fix is in for 2001 and it is:

Move the small yellow wire to the position of the small pink wire with the blue tracer and move the small pink wire with the blue tracer to the position of the small yellow wire.

In keeping with Shovelheads reasoning, what about in stalling a small momentary push button, that way you can still check the bed contents but not forget to turn the cargo light off.

It's been several years but if I remember right trading the wires on the back of the switch makes the bed light come on when you open a door.
