Pros & Cons on 2nd Gen 12v.

I have been looking at the 12v trucks.
I was wondering what are the pros & cons on the 12v trucks? 1st and 2nd gen, but would rather it be 2nd gen. How are the 5speeds & are the autos reliable? I plans on haveing the truck as a daily driver,i was looking at SRW, once i get out of college if i want to put a flatbed on the truck i can always convert to DRW for the extra payload capacity..

Thanks
Jeff

I wouldn't have anything else but a 12v... If your going to pull alot you don't need the auto personally I like the 5speed. As for the pro's and con's of the 1st and 2nd gens I like them both.

Go to the 12 valve engine and drivetrain section and read the thread 93 vs 94 there are a few posts in there about the differences in the two.

not many cons with the 12V

Pros are that is is easy to work on, easy to modify, no electronic gizmos, Massive power gains with simple procedures.

Cons: KDP is the only thing i can think of, but again it can be fixed, on the trucks tho, if they are 4wd, track bar, and front end might give issues as well

I will go read that post in the 12v section. I was leaning more towards the 5spd, beacuase later on if i wanted to wouldn't i be able to convert it to a 6spd? The other reason i was looking at the 12v is for the reason TxDiesel stated easier to get power out of them. I am looking for a 4x4 since i will most likly hang a plow on the front of it for winter.

I've owned a 99 24 valve and 03 and now a 95. I like the 95 better than any of the others I've owned. It is a simple truck and easy to work on and do minor mods.

Also one more thing on the 2nd gen (1st too???) trucks, since they are heavyer, moreso the 4x4's, the front brakes wear kind of fast.

the only advantage I personally see the 24 valve having is that the head flows better, and variable timing

12V sticks you with either a weak auto or a 5-speed lacking enough gears and a tendency to lose the 5th gear nut. Six speed is the best thing to happen to a stock Dodge CTD. (jmo).

12V also means you're stuck with weak brakes (relative to 4w db on 01.5+).

12V heads flow less.

12Vs are rare with a quad cab (only 1998).

That said, there plenty of cons to the 24V as well, but those don't need re-hashing.

the worst thing about the 24v in my books are the auto tranny's (same for 12v too) and the injection/lift pumps. I'm spending $1600 on a hot rod injection pump that i don't really need...but the extra ponies are gonna be sweeeeeeeeet

I will most likly convert it over to a 6spd sooner or later for pulling a trailer.

Can i covert the rear to disk brakes? or When i do the flatbed i am gonna try to find a rear end out of a 2001.5+ dually would one of those mount up to a 12v?

A QC is not a concern,if i can find a 98 for the right price i would ****** it up,but i aint really worried if it is SC or QC.

I came over from a PSD to the 12 valve and am still surprised by how much I like this engine, the way it behaves etc. and the dependability is just the cake.

As far as auto vs manual look over the towing forums. Those guys know it when it comes to towing. I'd take a weak auto over a weak manual anyday and once its built you'd never look back Then again if you like a stick ... get one. Autos have come a long way in how they tow but there is still a lot of old notions about them being less efficent, which is not true anymore, especially when they are built.

Hey, I am mainly looking for a manual, but if i cant find one then i will go auto. I want the manual for the reason of it being easier to convert to a 6spd if i want to. If i get a 12v and i would like a dually to start off with but if not i want to convert is cause i never will know when i will have to hook the 10,000lbs trailer up to it.Which is another reason for manual(to convert it),the 6 speed in the 01.5 realy help in pulling the trailer, they only problem we have with the 6spd is the sycros are going in 3rd and 4th which we have been getting away with double clucthing it.
