Did you have a snowplow on there?

Mine never reads right with the plow on due to the sensor location.

Mine does the same thing every now and then but will eventually straighten out. I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine seems to do that when it has been sitting idling or when I first start it up not long after I have turned it off. My guess was that it was picking up heat from the radiator since after I get going it straightens out. The first time I noticed it was when I was sitting in a parking lot with the a/c running waiting for my wife to run in the store and it read 108.

Mine is as inconsistent as can be too. It reads a believable number when I first start driving, but then starts reading way too hot. It reads up to 140F in warmer weather. I assumed that it must be getting heated by the radiator or somethng else. I looked around by the hood latch but can't find it. I am guessing some previous owner mounted the sensor in a improper place. What does it look like?

It's only by the latch on the newer trucks.
On your '96 it's almost behind the driver's side headlight on the radiator mount.
Only thing in that area that has wires going to it.

Sometimes the the temp can throw you for a loop when you park overnight. My understanding is that it will read the temp it was when you shut down the next time you start for a few minutes. Thus if there was a radical temp change while parked it won't be correct.
