Original motor?.........or not?

Hey everybody, I was wondering if there is an absolute way to tell if the motor has been replaced in a truck. Are there numbers on the block/engine that match it to the truck V.I.N.?

I believe most companies stopped matching VINs and engine numbers in the late 60s early 70s?

You may be able to get info from a dealer regarding the build sheet. The engine has its own serial number that doesn't have anything to do with the vin. You may be able to narrow down the engine by getting the block casting sequence and info off the id plate at the front drivers top side of block off of it and comparing to year of truck and location of manufacture.

Well howdy neighbor...Bunnlevel just down the road from Erwin on the other side of Cape Fear River.

As was mentioned, might be able to narrow it down by build sheet and have an idea when the engine was installed from factory--engine might even have a date stamp?

Mine had some kind of barcode and number/letter sequence on the drivers side of the valve cover, but the steamer washed it off!

Maybe yours still has it and it can be deciphered by someone on here........

Just curious but why are you wondering? Regarding your question though, there would definitely be tell tale left behind on body parts. You cant get the engine out unless you remove the whole front of the truck. Nuts and bolts with factory paint will indicate that you have the stock motor.

[QUOTE=KATOOM;3017287]Just curious but why are you wondering?

Well...this truck is fairly new to me....couple months and in the process of chasing gremlins a friend noticed that the wiring harness clamps/straps? were all unbolted from where they would normally be to secure the wiring in place. I had noticed this before, but to be honest never gave it a second thought .....until friend said "the motor musta been outta this thing"....which got me thinkin - how could you even tell if the motor had possibly been replaced.....and if it has, ....unknown miles???. Maybe I shouldnt think so much......
