no vent control... burned vacuum line

Well, the heat and a/c temp controls work fine, but it's stuck on defrost. A tip led me to check the vacuum line in the engine compartment just above the exhaust downpipe. Sure enough, the 90* vacuum line fitting had rubbed the exhaust and melted a bit. No prob to replace the fitting, but the vacuum line on the dash side also burned just past the rubber end cap that slides over the platic 90* elbow. Any tips to repair (hopefully not replace, since it snakes around the heater core under the dash to invisibilty) the line? Can I splice the line with a new end piece?
Thanks for the tips, always great to find SOMEONE who has fought these gremlins before!
