12v have mechanical injection pump and is very reliable.

24v has electronic vp44 injection pump prone to failure and is expensive to replace(add a fuel pressure gauge right away so you know the pump is getting fuel pressure which help the pump live longer.

12v has killer dowel pin (kdp) which is a tab on the front of the motor that can work loose and go through the motor. Theres a cheap fix for it that is only a couple bucks.

24v look out for the 53 block on earlier 24v's like 98 and 99 they have an area prone to cracking. The number is cast onto the block on the drivers side near the bottom front corner.

12v has a bunch of things that can be done to the pump for free that will give you preformance upgrades. Do a search for afc, 0 plate, 3k gsk. I don't have a 12v so I cant go into great detail about them and haven't really read much on it.

24v Many differnt boxes, chips, and programers for these trucks and can get good deals on used ones out of the classifeieds here. 24v comes stock with more power then 12v but both can be turned up fairly easily.

24v don't have a catylitic converter.

Quad cab started in 98 along with updateing the dash and rest of the interior. You can get a 98 12v with quad cab then you get the more reliable pump and opening back doors. If you get a 24v in 2001.5 they added rear disc brakes.

Im sure there are other things and others will chime in.

Just a suggestion - I see that you are interested, but you really ought to give a long-term consideration to your use and intrest in such a truck. It has become incredibly expensive over the past 2 years to operate this truck, mainly due to fuel costs. I use a daily driver (dd) Honda Accord 95%+ of the time. I could not have realized when I purchased my 12-valve over 6 years ago that fuel would be $4.00+. I would weigh this much more than which model before you even start looking.

I agree with Mopar on the 98, Quad cab, 12 valve. Wish I could have found one of them myself, but all the ones I found were either automatics or had more miles than I wanted.
