needs some help speedo problem

i have a neighbor has a 99 24v when he takes off the speedo doesn't read until he gets up around 40mph then it reads correctly. but once he stops it goes back to 0 and stays there until he gets back up to speed. what does this sound like to you. and is the speedo mechanical or electronic.

Sounds like there could be corrosion in the wiring that feeds to the rear diff sensor, or the sensor itself is starting to fail.

Before I replaced my rear diff sensor, my speedo wouldn't work, unless it was wet out. Once it was wet the moisture would enter the wires and allow the sensor to work. Finally took out my rear sensor, it was completely corroded and the white with red wire (If I have the colours right) had the "green death" in a section. My speedo also never worked until above a certain speed. Fixed the wiring and replaced the sensor and works great now.

Hey Dwiit, sorry I took so long to get a picture.

Here are a couple I took this morning while working on the truck, hopefully they help.
