My headlights go out sometimes when turning on brights?

Hi,

I have a problem with my 02' RAM 2500 where sometimes when I flip the switch to go to high beam on the headlights the headlights will shut off. I was wondering if anybody else has had the same problem with their trucks. Is it a bad switch on the steering column? It only happens when the switch is flipped to go to dim or brights. You have to switch it back & forth between dim & bright a few times before the headlights come back. Not very good thing when driving at night.

Thanks,
Mike

Unless you like fire disconnect the batteries before spraying electronic cleaner at the base of the MF switch while working it back and forth.
Switch is hot all the time.

Thanks for the information. I will try this before trying to replace the switch. I will also disconnect the batteries too as you noted, infidel. Thanks for the info.

This forum is amazing, I just signed on to ask the exact same question.
Hasn't done it in a while, but if I remember correctly, my lo beams won't come on after I flip off my hi beams...same problem?

Hello,

Yes, I would say it's most likely the exact same problem. I've heard other people say that even owned other Chrysler cars that they have had problems with this switch. I'm going to try looking at mine & see if it needs cleaning. If doesn't fix it then I guess I'll replace mine.

If you have ever pulled the steering wheel or column cover off one of these older rigs it's amazing how much crud has built up.
Sunflower seeds, french frys, etc, and that's just the big stuff.
Same crud gets inside the open design of the MF switch and just needs to be cleaned out.
