Muffler replacement
1998 24 valve,. My muffler is going to need replacing. I am in the Salt Lake City area,. I am not young enough to want to do it myself. What should I expect to pay. I have nothing to go by, but if I have a general idea,.I know whether to keep looking or not once I find a muffler shop. it has been literally 25ish years since I hired a muffler shop to do a muffler, and that was in L.A.,I think it was about 90 bucks at the time ..gas was about 90 cents.
Please chime in if you have an idea what it would cost,...especially in utah or another rural area.

In the time you've been waiting and not receiving any responses, you could have looked up some places online that are in your area (why would you want prices from outside your area?) and picked up the phone and gotten some prices. The average of those prices will be your "general idea". Cost will depend at least somewhat on what you want for a muffler - OE-replacement is probably not going to cost the same as a performance muffler and you need to specify your requirements/desires with the prospective shops.

Of course I already called a few..before I posted, they all said they want me to bring it in before they can give me prices. Until I am doing a job near one of them, it's going to cost me too much in time if I just drive to a few of them and get a quote. My truck has all my tools, etc. which enable me to work every day. I imagine I'll be doing a job near a shop sooner or later, and that will probably be my choice.

It wasn't apparent from your post that you had already called some places - I can imagine the frustration at the responses you got. I certainly understand about the time issues involved in driving for a quote if you aren't near a shop. I haven't looked into it in a long time, but have you looked to see what a prefabbed turbo-back or muffler-back system, plus muffler, would cost? With that, you might be able to find a shop that would give a labor estimate, since they wouldn't have the uncertainty (or not much, anyway) of how much time would be required to fab everything up.
Alternatively, I'm sure there are some writeups on the web where magazines have gone to shops to get such systems mounted. You might be able to find one and see if they mention how much time was required. Multiply that by say $100/hr (?) labor rate and add that to the cost of the prefabbed system mentioned above. That might give you an idea of what to expect.

The last time I paid for exhaust work has to be 20+ years ago. I sure I'll be doing my own the rest of my driving years.
How about looking up a muffler with the right dimensions, some clamps/hangers? You can figure a shop is going to markup the same another 33% and charge $100/hr to install it.
