Lowering my 4x4 for trailer pulling
Hi all,

I am looking into lowering my 97 2500 3" front and rear. I know different lowering blocks in the rear will handle the job.

The questions is the front. If I buy springs from a 2WD 3500 (which are 2.5" shorter), what possibilities for binding up the front suspension will I run into. I am also thinking the track bar will need to be shortened to get the front end back under the center of the truck. Is there something else I'm missing?

Steering arm angle?

Has anyone done this? I'm doing it to pull my 5th wheel. I like the 4WD for tight spots and don't off road the truck.

Thanks, Don Miller
97 2500, #8, Scotty II, 16 deg timed, 3k springs, PDR 370 injectors, Rip's 4" shorty, Full gauges, custom Trans by Frank

If you look atthe distance between the rubber bumper and the front axle, you only have aboout 3" of travel in the front. If you try to lower it you will be bottomed out. Besides I don't think that you can use the 2wd springs anyway.
You can lower the rear 3". Then use air bags to maintain that ride height when you have the trailer hooked up.

Buy a 2WD and I can help you make it as low as mine. 4WD there is only one kit I can think of to lower a 4x4 and thats for a chevy a guy around here did a durango but its wasn't pretty work thats forsure it can be done but its pretty much impossible to lower a 4x4. You can block the back but the front I have no idea what you would do.

Have you considered doing spring work on your trailer? If they're below the axles, they can easily be "flipped" to the top for a 4-6 inch gain. There are a number of kits on the market for doing this, and some of them don't require welding new pads. Easier than lowering the truck.

ascraeus

A simple way to decrease the height would be to replace the lift blocks between the axles and springs with shorter ones. The stock ones are 5"!!

Why do you want to lower the front end? If you lowered JUST the rear, you should be able to tow whatever you want from the added clearance, and the truck will be level so appearance will be fine.

HOHN

Re:Lowering my 4x4 for trailer pulling
Don,
I think you would be better off raising the trailer. As was mentioned, mounting the spring perches on top of the axle should give you the heighth you need. One of my traveling buddies pulls a Montana fifth behind his 4x4 with no problems caused by the ride heighth.
I think that would be much better than messing with the front end geometry. Besides raising the trailer will be a lot easier.

Bill

Re:Lowering my 4x4 for trailer pulling
Two reasons for lowering the front or the truck. The truck currently rides very level when empty. That's why I want to lower it front and rear. It already looks like there are shorter lowering blocks in the back from a PO. The second reason is the trailer. I want to lower it. The trailer is a 35' 5th wheel that I load a Corvette into. I would like it to be a little lower so the ramps don't have to be so long. NOt a huge deal just wanting some convineince.

Thanks, Don
