Question Instrument Panel Icons - LED's or bulbs?

It appears my 4WD icon on the instrument panel has stopped illuminating. 4WD works fine, but when I turn the key, all of the icons light up except that one, and when I engage it, it doesn't light up. Does anyone know if these are LED's or bulbs? Also, how hard is it to take the cluster out to service it?

Warm up your soldering iron, FSM says it's an LED :

"...the indicator is illuminated from behind by a Light Emitting Diode (LED) soldered onto the instrument cluster electronic circuit board. The four-wheel drive indicator is serviced as a unit with the instrument cluster."

Should be easy to remove. Pop the bezel, and remove the screws holding the cluster in place. Pull it out a bit and remove the wires from the back, and with an auto, remove two screws that hold the gear selection indicator from the back. A stubby screwdriver might be handy for those, I guess.

That I can do. Although "The four-wheel drive indicator is serviced as a unit with the instrument cluster" sounds ominous. Thanks, Jim.

I agree. Seems like a lot of work--programming a replacement odometer, etc.--just to replace a burned out LED.

Perhaps I'm mistaken but thought leds never burned out unless they were hit by over voltage.

As far as I know, LEDs can and do burn out, it just typically takes a long time. In this case you might be right, though, and perhaps the cluster took an electrical hit, or maybe vibration took it out? Or maybe the LED itself is alright, but a solder trail on the circuit board got broken by vibration? Hard to guess, but you'd think an LED would last longer than 2 years.

LED's have a lifetime in the tens of thousands of hours, and it bothers me that my 4WD icon, something I use very little could burn out. But if my drivetrain was defective, the icon would still come on during the start-up display test, right? I'm nearly 99% sure my 4WD is working because I used it last weekend to get out of some snow. It pulled me out, but the light never came on.

Commatoze, try this link before you pull your dash apart. I still have'nt been able to check my wires yet, but it seems like a good starting point to me.

On top of the pass side front axle. Just jump the leads together, if the light doesn't come on the problem is in the wiring or bulb.

Indicator switch is somewhere on the Transfer Case since the CAD isn't there anymore.

Where exactly, I have no idea, but hazarding a guess, somewhere out of reach of normal human hands.

Tom, did you ever figure out why the light didn't come on?
