Ignition key warning horn

Ignition key warning horn
My ignition key warning horn has been working intermittently. For the past 2 days it has not worked. Today, it started working again. Can anyone inform me where this horn is located and whether it is a stand alone horn or part of another assembly. Also, anyway to troubleshoot it. Thanks.

Pretty sure that the buzzer / chime whatever is for all the warnings.

It should be located underneath the ash tray in the kick panel. Rumored to be the size of a quater.

I have been meaning to take mine out as annoying and I don't think it will effect anything else.

B

On my '98 the 'tattletale' is the same for the headlights as for the ignition. Hate it for the ignition but there have been a number of times it reminded me I'd left the lights on. Still thinking of removing it though. [undecided]

Stan

Re:Ignition key warning horn
There is a thread on here to disconnect the ign wire under the steering column cover. I did that about a year ago. It is good to have the chime for the lights. It catches me once in a while. If you can't find the thread, I will look up which wire it is, I just cut it, no more key chime.

Re:Ignition key warning horn
I TOOK MINE OUT A LONG TIME AGO. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ONE DAY AND IT JUST STARTED GOING CRAZY . IT TOOK ME A LITTLE WHILE TO FIND IT, BUT WITH THE CONSTANT BUZZING I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO FIND IT. OPEN THE FUSE PANEL AND ITS THE LITTLE BLACK BOX TO THE LEFT OF THE FUSE BLOCK. (ABOUT THE SIZE OF A CREDIT CARD). GETTING IT OUT IS A DIFFERENT STORY [undecided]. THERE IS REALLY NO GOOD WAY TO GET TO IT, SO I FINALLY GOT A BIG FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER AND PUT THE HEAD AGAINST THE SIDE OF MODULE CLOSEST TO THE FUSE BLOCK AND JUST PUSHED IT OUT TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK. (SOUNDS CONFUSEING BUT YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU SEE IT). IT BENDS THE PRONGS ON THE MODULE BUT I DON'T CARE, DON'T PLAN ON PUTTING IT BACK IN. BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THERE IS A BUCH OF OTHER STUFF BEHIND IT. IT SURE IS NICE NOT HEARING THAT THING EVERY TIME YOU TURN ON THE KEY. THE ONLY THING IS TO REMEMBER TO TURN OFF YOUR HEADLIGHTS, YOU DON'T HAVE A REMINDER ANYMORE. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK!!!
haulin in dixie can you PM me that wire location I would love to get rid of that chime!
Jamie I will give you the info that I have. On mine I took the covers off the column and on top of the column on the driver side of the dash there is a multi wire connector. The light blue wire is the "key in" switch. I did not cut mine but took the wire out of the plug. That is on a '99. I suspect that yours will be the same, being a 2002. Other threads mention a two pin plug with black and white wires which is suspect is the earlier trucks.

The wire in question goes to the IEM under the dash or the high line box if you have keyless entry. It could also be disconnected there but I chose to do it on top. For more information search "key" and scroll down to about October 2002 and there is a fairly extensive thread on this subject including the location of a thread on another site. If you have a service manual just get the schematic for the switch and the wires are all laid out by color.

The IEM mentioned is the box that controlls the wiper delay, chimes, and a few other things, just to the right of the steering column with about a 15 wire plug on it. Jack mentioned this box. If you have the high line box, it has two plugs, the same one and an additional plug on it to controll the alarm, keyless, etc.

Hope all this helps.

Bill

Re:Ignition key warning horn
The buzz box is visable from the fuse box as described by wagontrain131. There is actually two buzzer diaphrams in this black box. I hated to hear the buzzer while the radio was on with the doors open, so after confirming which diaphram buzzes while the door was open (by pushing on it with a screw driver lightly the buzzing will stop), I used a small screwdriver and just pushed a hole in the diaphram. I still get the buzz for ignition on, but no more "door open or headlights on".

Headlight on is no big deal cause I'm sure we all "check out our ride" as we are walking away anyways. Kevin
