Is there a way to check the hour meter on a 2002 like you can on the 3rd gens?

Not that I am aware of. I believe the 3rd gen is the only one that can do that so far.

I saw a neat aftermarket hour meter install somewhere. It was a small Hobbs rectangular one and he put it on the side of the transfer case shifter console. Very clean, unobtrusive and out of the way for a non critical gauge.
