homemade bumpers

o.k. guys, dont have the funds right now to buy new front and rear bumpers ,looking for ideas to fabricate my own.after backing into a lightpole during a poweroutage from our recent icestorm i have decided a heavyduty truck needs HEAVYDUTY bumpers!Any pics and specs would be greatly appreciated! Would like to build something for the front bumper that would give you room to stand on and work in the engine compartment.Just dont want to copy any of the manufacturers ideas or their specs. Thanks for any info!

found an old thread of mine, cost a total of 150$ to make. I did hit a tire at 65mph and it caused a fair bit of damage, there is a link inside this thread, so you can see what did happen. I have since repaired it and finished all gussets/bracing

Make it too strong and your frame is fubar when you take a good hit.

I used the stock bumper mounts, at the time of the build, I had only put it together on the truck and had not pulled the bumper off so I could weld the back side, if you look at the damage you can see clean breaks on all the welds, when I fixed it last I fully weld the back side first, then welded and cleaned up the welds with a grinder, plus I plated the stock mounts. there was a huge impact hitting that tire/rim. I'm betting if I had hit a deer I would not have had the same results.

Remember your bumper should have a weak point to absorb shock so you don't wreck the frame and total your truck out.

Ask my BIL about this, he had a sweet 1st gen flatbed that took and angled hit on his "DeerClearer" homebuilt bumper and tore the frame open at the front axle mounts. They offered him $1250 for the truck. It sat in his front yard for two years until my sis finally sold it to a local for parts.

Hey man, hit me up in a PM, I'll be glad to give you any tips and tricks you want for making your own bumper. If you have a welder and patience, then all it really requires is time!

90-110 ..probably
it looks okay better from afar...
but soon i will build one with help from 2 friends of mine that can actually weld not like me... I would like to learn some day cause I weld like a blind man....
I did keep the same oem mounts, but when I do the next one I will build mounts just a tad bit thicker than oem mounts and same bolt patterns. use 8 gr bolts.. my bumper is basically tubed with metal skin covering it...I will try and craigslist it soon for cheap and then start the other bumper...

Backwoods-bumper
that is really good on you for putting up some tips alot of places would get offended by people trying to make there own. that great. I do like your 2nd gen bumpers they are smooth looking with the profile. not like mine. it sticks out pretty far, but I do have a place to stand when doing under hood stuff..
