You are correct, the blend door is electrically operated...........but it isn't the cause of your problem. It only controls the heater air temp. The mode switch changes where the air is directed, and is vacuum operated.
You should be looking for a vacuum problem, possibly a vac leak. When there is a vacuum loss, the heater mode "defaults" to the defrost position.
