Headlights Dimming

Diesel Gods,
When I cold start my baby 8) sometimes the headlights will slightly dim, then brighten. Other times I notice it while waiting in line at a drive thru. Some people have told me that my bulbs are a little dimm. Has anyone heard of or had such a problem? Thanks.

When it is cold, that is your grid heaters cycling. Once the truck has warmed up a bit it will stop doing this. Mine is very noticible since it has been down in the 20's lately

No problem as long as it stops when the temp comes up. If you look at your volt meter, you will see it drop way back when the lights go dim. That is how much power those heaters take. Mine would drop back so far, it would drop the car phone off line.

Evey time you restart the engine, the grid heater will cycle a bit, even if the engine is warm. Until the vehicle reaches 29mph I think, the grid heater will cycle if you just start up and go also. Don't be alarmed, its normal.

DD mine was doing the same: Needle dropping waaaay left when the heaters kicked in.
Started taking 20-30 seconds or more to recover, check guages light stayed on for 20-30 seconds after morning fire-up.
Dropped two new batteries in the Beast Saturday, now takes 4-5 seconds to recover and the check guages light goes out 4-5 seconds after start-up. ;D

Re:Headlights Dimming

Don't they cycle until you hit like 1800RPM or something?

I think the ECM/PCM controls them by Temps, RPM, and MPH.

I dropped in 2 Autocraft (Advance Auto Parts brand made by Johnson Controls) 800 CCA. $85.00 ea.
Looked at Optimas, but only 700 CCA and $140 ea.
Same warranty- less $$$. And they have removeable caps so I can keep an eye on the Electrolite levels.
