Fuel sender part number?

I have been digging through the old threads but can't nail down if there was a serial number split in 2000 that would have the fuel pump in or out of the tank. My sender quit (i think - gage dropped to empty). Trying to sort it out so I can have the parts ready before I drop the tank to minimize my down time. Any help is appreciated.

The sender is available separately for about $60 but many dealer parts guys will tell you that you have to buy the entire $300 tank module.
Not true at all. Sorry don't have the part number.

Was at the dealer today. My truck apparently has the in tank fuel pump upgrade which they say means it uses a different sender than the original. They said there is no seperate pieces they know of to fit the pump / sender module. Gonna have to drop the tank to figure out exactly what I have, maybe go aftermarket with a sender unit with the same ohm range.

Truck is a 2000. Was told that if there was an electric fuel pump, that meant it has been changed to the pump in tank.
Is it correct to believe that this truck was originally made with a mechanical pump (not electric)? I have read alot of info about lift pumps not making enough pressure and the fix being the use of an aftermarket pump. My truck definately has an electric pump and will not start without it. Gonna have a good look at it today to see just what I have

The 2000 came originally with an electric pump on the rear drivers side of the block down low. Just below and back a bit from the filter canister. It is possible it was retrofited by the dealer with an intank pump within the last few years. The sending unit itself as far as I know is available seperately as I have bought one. However it was for the stock unit not the intank unit. So I guess I cant be sure you can get the sending unit seperately for a retrofit tank.
Vulcan Performance may be able to help you.

If it is the intank pump they have it. If you want to upgrade the pump to aftermarket they have it. If you want to replace the complete canister /sending assembly they have it with or without a drawstraw installed. Or just about any combo thereof. Certainly worth a call.

The fuel level sender in the tank is a very very common part to fail.

I replaced mine on an 02 2500 without the in tank pump and the part number was.......04897669AB This is just the sender only, no module or anything........just a float and a potentiometer basically.

Unless your 2000 at some point in it's life was retrofitted with an in tank pump, this is the part number to use to get your gage working again.

Yes you have to drop the tank but I did mine is less than an hour with a floor jack and it wasn't a big deal. My dealer does so many, they can do it without dropping the tank in about a 1/2 hour.

Check the part number first because it is a Canadian part number but of all the parts I have ordered out of the US, the part numbers so far have all been the same between countries.

Hope it helps.

Jeff

Thanks fellas, this is very helpful. Did some tinkering today and found that there is no pump in the tank. Found the part through the dealer (same as the one in the replies) for a hefty mark up (it's a Canadian thing I think). I can get it online without any trouble. The plug on top of the tank and the fuel lines seem pretty tight. Gonna tear into it as soon as I have room in the shop.

Does it make sense to have about 6 volts going to the sender?
I tried to jump accross the plug to see if the dash gage moved but it did nothing.
Has anybody ever had the gage in the dash fail as well? Any suggestions on how to test it? Considered getting a 200 ohm resister and using it to cross the sensor leads and see what happens.
