Fuel guage sending unit

My fuel gauge sending unit has been out on my '97 since I got it. I think im gonna go ahead and do it this weekend. Just wondering where to get the part. Is it a dealer only sorta thing or can they get em at regular parts stores? And about how much do they run? Thanks.

I did it on my 95 and unfortunetly it's a dealer only item they will try to sell you the whole module but you more than likley only need the little potentiometer at least that was all I needed on mine.

The dealer wil try to sell you the entire $300+ module but you only need the part number 4797738 sender --- $48.96

Check your lines at the top of the sender. Mine had rusted through and was leaking fuel. Seems odd that is the only piece of metal on the plastic thing and it rusts to pieces!!!!

I bought just the sender part on one of the dodge oem parts sites.. I think dodgeparts.com or something. Its in an odd place in the drill down menu.
If it looks rusty on those fuel lines and fittings, Id lose the stock pickups and fuel lines altogether in favor of diesel fuel hose and maybe a vulcan draw straw.

Save your money and just repair the sender. If your lines aren't bad, you can fix it for under $5. Search the threads on this site. There are many that give you the instructions on the fix.

i don't know about reparing it like the last post said, but i do know dodge wants something around $300 for it like what was mentioned. I got one at a junkyard for $100, which i still though was a little high, but i think they guy knew what he had and what it cost. Once you get it out you can meter it and see if it is good or not. the haynes manual tells you what the resistance should be. i dont remember off hand what the ohm's are at full and empty. i have no experience about buying just the float.

As already noted above, you don't even need the module if you are just repairing an inoperative fuel gauge. A new sender and float is less than $50.
