Front End Loose

My steering is very loose. I think I need to replace the steering gear box, and maybe ball joints. Any advice, or good shops in Durango Colorado for this work?

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out. Is this a common problem?

Mine's loose. I have no doubt the steering gear box needs to be changed. Will do when it's warm! Rebuilt <$300. I have adjusted mine - helped some, not near enough.

Check the gear housing bolts to frame as they can come loose. Make sure the rest of the front end wear parts are ok!! And try to adjust the gear box before replacing. Nowhere in your question or signature does it state what year of truck, the early years had a problem of cracking around the gear box mounting area of the frame. Goodluck,,, Rick

If you have to replace the steering box, you can find them for around $225.00. I have seen them as low as $195.00 for a rebuild. I got a rebuilt one just yesterday for $232.00.

I have replaced everything in the front end of mine with the exception of the ball joints and steering box. It's still loose. Ball joints are good. The way we found it was the steering box was when we cranked the engine over, the front tires would jerk to the left. When I drove down the road, I fought to keep it in my lane. Has to do with the return to center.

Good luck.
