Anyone run a flow master 4" muffler on your truck? Do you like it?

chambered mufflers are not good for turbo applications. It creates back pressure and a turbocharged engine creates that on it's own. Pickup a magnaflow or dynomax straight thru design. Alot better flow and great sounding too.

Yep.. The flowmasters have been found to not be good on turbo diesels... Which is odd since the scavenge the exhaust, but the diesel no likey.. .

I have been running a 3" 40 series for a while now and I have no issues... Sounds nice... 30 psi of boost and 1000* EGT ... I see no problems

Wink FlowMaster

I've heard the thing about the FlowMaster not working on a turbo diesel. I just don't see how that's correct. The FM scavenges better than no muffler at all.

I've had a 3" on my '96 for several years now. It gives the sinature "low growl" sound that beats the heck out of a straight pipe, and has no hint of the dreaded highway "drone" you can get with a straight through.

I also have a 4" 30 series race muffler sitting here that I have never gotten around to putting on the '96. It and the rest of the 4" exhaust will now go to the '94. The part number is 54030-12. I talked to the tech guys at FM, and they told me since the TD has such a high exhaust volume, you should only use the "large body" race muffler.

Check out this description on Summit Racing's site:

Flowmaster Delta Force 30 Series Race Mufflers
30 Series sound from a full race muffler.

Flowmaster's patented Delta Flow technology was used to create the Delta Force Race line. These Delta Force 30 Series mufflers provide maximum flow, with increased scavenging for added torque and horsepower in race applications. This revolutionary technology has allowed Flowmaster to shrink case sizes for improved ground clearance, while at the same time reducing exterior sound levels and interior resonance, major causes of driver fatigue. Flowmaster builds this series of mufflers by hand to ensure that they are the very best, in the most demanding environments. These are the mufflers that can deal with 1,000 or more horsepower - the zone where truth and consequences come together at the light!

I have read several articles where the results from FM mufflers was much worse than before...

Personally I like FM mufflers, but won't run one on my diesel..

Also they don't hold up to heat very well at all, every one I, my dad, my buddies, have had have deteriorated from the inside out in less than 2 years.

Question

Were the installs you speak of on diesels or gassers? Gassers make more corrosive condensation in the exhaust system.

Well, I've had mine on for 4+ years and 150K+ miles, and it's still good. I mounted it back in almost the same position as the stocker in front of the rear axle.

I wonder how many of those "tests" were done with the standard body size, and not the larger "race" body?

Straight through (glass-pack style) are what most would recommend. I've heard many stories of the "drone" at highway speeds. I think it varies from one style/maunfacturer to another. Also not as bad if the muffler is back under the bed and not the cab. I installed a 4" polished stainless steel straight through "canister" style muffler on a lightly modded '95 with custom 4" stacks. The guy I did it for loved it.

So what about a straight through FM race muffler. Do they make them?

Even though it would seem somewhat against their therories on "chambered" mufflers, they actually do offer a straight through race series called "outlaw":

http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/outlaw.html

"OUTLAW Technology Explained

By using sound expansion rings inside the muffler, a low pressure area is created behind each ring helping to accelerate pulses and reducing sound energy as it passes each ring. The result is an increase in torque while taking the edge off of open header applications."

All the ones I have used are on gassers... .Yes the exhaust may be more corrosive, but the muffler lasts MUCH less than a cheap POS...

Also the tests were on the "diesel" mufflers FM sells, or sold.. I can't find them on the website anymore...

Flowmaster is building the "Hushpower" muffler, it works great on the CTD.... Kills the Drone and tames the cab noise, yet sounds great out the pipe.
