Factory stereo
I have the 99 Dodge 2500 SLT. It has to 6x9's in the doors and 2 smaller speakers in the back door panels. It also has 2 tweeters up front. I was wondering, by installing better quality speakers in the front and back, would this make much difference in sound? I dont really want to put in an amp. Does the factory stereo have neough power or am i wasting my time. I just want a little better sound....

YES! I put in a full set of Sony Xplod 4-way speakers and it sounds great now. It's nice and crisp without distortion. Before it was loomy, if that's even a word... The factory speakers have amps attached behind each speaker. You will need to bypass those for better sound quality. Basically, find which 2 (of 4) wires that go to each speaker are for sound; the other two are power wires. I went ahead and re-wired each speaker with 14 guage speaker wire. At the time I was having some problems with my deck so I wasn't able to test the wires behind each speaker to see if sound came out but it should work. I don't know if the factory deck has enough power to run speakers this way. Might have to get a new deck. The rear speakers are 5.25" round.

Cool, i was hoping to eliminate not buying a new deck to avoid people breakin in or something....So, by using those little plastic amps with new speakers would make the sound worse...?

Not sure what you mean by plastic amps. There's 4 amplifiers built into each factory speaker. If you get new speakers you won't be able to use those amps. The amps make sound quality worse and running the speakers straight to the deck is best. That way you use the deck's built-in amplifier and can control the equalizer.

I'm pretty sure upgrading either component (receiver or speakers) will improve sound quality over the OE equipment. I just did a JVC receiver install today. Sound is greaty improved over stock.
Next is the speakers, then maybe a small sub.
BTW, HD radio is AMAZING! Sounds better than CD's.

Oh yeah, the amps have that plastic cover on it. Let's put it this way... I wanted to compare the factory speakers (with amps) to the new Sony speakers. So while I was installing everything, I hooked the stockers up to a brand new deck, and well, it sounded like crap.

Go w/Polk Audio....you won't be disappointed. You can pick up a new cd player and the polks from crutchfield pretty cheap. I purch all my stuff there and have had zero problems. 500watts in the truck and 1000+watts in the boat.
