Eliminating the door chime

Is there any way to get rid of that annoying chime when the door is open and the key is in the ignition?

Pretty sure on an '01 if you remove the steering column cover and unplug the small connector to the key the dinging will stop. If you have a lighted key halo you will lose this also.
With this method it will still ding if you leave the headlights on.
