Yes I checked the fuses on the left side and they looked ok from what a flashlight and I could see(it is dark though). I will let you know tomorrow if it was the alternator 140amp fuse, I hope the dealer has one in stock. Thanks for all your help!

I'd give the parts places a call to see if they have one per chance first, before going to the dealer though, you never know...

Get a multi tester and check the fuses with that. A fuse may look good and still be burned out.

An easy way to check your alternator is to put a screwdriver tip to the back of the middle section it when the engine is running. If it is magnetized that tells you the basics of the alternator are okay....

You can get an 80 amp fuse at auto zone and they work fine. I've had an 80 amp in for almost a year now since I blew the 140 amp one last march on my way to Michigan. Unless someone can tell me why running the lower amp fuse is bad, I'll probably leave it that way. I've got one in my glove box just in case too.

An easy way to check the alternator is to use a voltmeter and check the voltage on your batteries when the truck is running. If they are charging (the alternator is working) it will read in the neighborhood of 14 volts instead of 12 which would be just the battery charge.

One last thing, when you do get it running again, make sure you have enough juice to kick the alternator in. I ran my batteries most of the way dead looking for help in an unknown area and I got a jump after replacing the alternator and the fuse but my truck still wasn't charging and I wasn't sure what to do. A wise man from the auto zone that tested my alternator and helped me replace it in the parking lot brought out a battery pack type starter and added that to my depleted batteries and bumped me over 9 or 10 volts and then the alternator kicked in and I was good to go.

I hope your luckier than me. I hit the alternator with an oil filter wrench and caused a spark. It killed my alternator.

I have replaced a few new alternators for people who did precisely that. Most manufactures explain in the instructions not to even try to initial start them if the battery is under 11 volts. I know its a pain, and sometimes not possible to charge em up to snuff before, but if ya can it is a really good idea.

ur lucky ur rench wasnt contacting ur wedding ring, if you have one. My boss did the same thing in the engine room of a boat. When he felt the ring get hot after less than a sec he reached to pull it off and his whole finger came with it. everything but the bone. Horror story i know. It took like 5 surgeries to fix all the nerves and stuff.

Well you guys were right; it was the 140 amp fuse. I had to get it from a dealer for a little over $11, still better than $175 for alternator. Thanks for everyones help it saved me a lot of time and aggravation.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. Nine times out of ten, that's the problem.
