Cruise control wont disengage

Just found out today that tapping the brake wont turn off the cruise control. Works fine from the button.
I almost never use it anyways, but only had the truck for a week and was messing around today. Come up on a stop light, cruise set, start braking, gas pedal goes to the floor, cummins screams, whole trucks bogs down. Hit the button on the steering wheel and came to a stop. Look over at the lady in the little accord next to me, she was like this

Went into a big emtpy parking lot a little later to test it again, same thing, I floor the brake pedal, gas pedal floors itself and antilocks start going nuts.

??? Do your brake lights work? If not, I'd check the switch. I'm not certain of this, but that would be my first check.

Yeah, lights work fine. Is there a pressure switch or is it electronically controlled?

The brake light switch can bad and the lights will still work as the switch has two sets of contacts, one for the lights and the other for the cruise and auto tranny.
Don't know about the '01 but for earlier models the switch is availible at Napa for $12.

Well, found out today they only sorta work. You have to mash the peddle for them to come on. Under normal braking they don't come on until you're almost completely stopped.

Is that is still the switch? need to get this fixed ASAP tomorrow morning

Sure sounds like the switch. Some folks have luck repositioning the switch, it's supposed to be self adjusting though.
I find it easier just to replace it, $12 doesn't hurt much.

Just a note for anyone else that has their switch go bad. The part Autozone, O'Reilly, Napa have wont work. They list them for 94-03, but the parts guy at the dealer told me the changed it in about '99.

I even looked through the parts books with the guys at O'Reilly and Napa, all they have listed is the same part for all trucks 94-03.

Had to get it at the dealer, $17.99 I'll come back later tonight and post the part number, might help some running a search later down the rode.
