Cost to replace vacuum pump

1997 4X4 diesel

In early April the cruse control quit for the second time. I knew it had somethng to do with the vacuum pump because I had fixed it once before. This time I couldn't quite find the problem so I took it to the Dodge dealer in St. George Ut.

The mechanic cleaned up the hoses and some other items and now the cruise control works. However, there is a 15 to 20 second time lag between setting the desired speed and when cruse control finally takes over. The mechanic claims this is due to a weak vacuum pump and wants to vacuum my wallet for $900.00. Ouch...

Can I do it cheaper? A rebuilt pump or a do it yourself kit of some kind??

Stan Evans

Re:Cost to replace vacuum pump

If your warrenty is up, go to a Cummins dealer, don't even mess with Dodge. You can get a vacuum pump for around $550. My local Dodge dealer wanted $325 for a lift pump, I just bought a new one from cummins for $148.50.

Binder

i think dodge may have just replaced my pump because the gasket was bad behind it but they don't get paid for gasket replacment. What a bussniess.they also charged the ind comp 174.00 to replace my tranny output shaft seal.Sounds like cummins has the good deals.

Re:Cost to replace vacuum pump

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to find a pump from a Cummings dealer or maybe some large parts houses carry them.

If I do find a pump, my next problem will be installing it. I don't suppose I could take a non Dodge pump to the dealer and have them put it in. Could I?

Stan Evans
