Clutch saftey start switch

This thing is on the clutch rod that goes through the fire wall. It slides on the clutch rod. It has as soft rubber washer or pad on the end closest to the firewall and a couple wires attached to it. I thought it might have an adjustment bracket but it just seems to float on the shaft. Electrical guys call these LVDT's (linear variable displacement transducers)

About the first snowfall I got some snow and ice under the pedal and noticed that there was a no start. I tromped on the pedal and it worked ok. Eventually I had to take out the mat and wash off the snow and ice. Now it has started again and I finally had to take out the mat altogether. That woked fine. Now it is getting more and more sensitive again.

It seems like the washer is compressing and letting the switch slide down farther on the shaft so you have to push the pedal further down. I worked it up and down on the shaft and it seems to be ok for a few days then it get to the point where I really have to tromp on the clutch pedal to get it to start.

At first I thought it was starter contacts and I got them but that doesn't seem to be the problem as it doesn't click or do any of the starter contact symptoms.

I do have new batteries, cables, clean contacts, good grounds. I grew up here in the salt belt so I'm well aware of these issues and keep everything pretty clean.

The clutch operation is very good as far as not slipping, releases clean, no leaks, and it has rock solid feel that has not changed in 100k miles. The pedal has no loosness or rattly feel at all.

You could run those wires to a hidden switch and would have some theft protection.
