Yup the outer shell of the mirror is plastic. Firestik offers a NGP (no ground plane) kit with a special mount, antenna and coax cable. if you visit the website it explains the NGP system. this system is made for vehicals with no metal to ground the antenna too. 8)

I mounted my radio on top of the dash above the center air vents. Keeps it up there where I can see it without looking down and it makes it much easier to hear. It doesnt look bad up there either other than being able to see the back of the radio from in front of the truck.
I ran the wires and the coax under the radio to the dash trim and ran it behind the trim and under the dash.
The antennas are mounted to the front fenders using the Firestik fender mounts. I mounted 2 four foot firestiks to them. Looks pretty sharp.
