Can't draw fuel from tank

I had just refueled after a cross country trip and 5 mi down the road the engine quit, ran out of fuel. I had run the tank very low on that last leg of the trip. I switched to my in bed tank and after re-priming the system drove on. I have switched back to the main tank several times with the same result.

QUESTION; can I blow air back thru the pick up line to clear the in-tank filter and how much pressure would be safe ?

Thanks

Id check your fuel lines for leaks and anything in the plumbing thats not part of the aux tank. You can bypass the metal lines with good quality USCG-approved diesel hose if in doubt. You can also pressurize the tank safely to 10PSI I think. That should help to find a leak.

It's extremely unusual for the in tank filter to clog up unless your tank is really full of crud. Sloshing of fuel in the tank keeps it clean.

Infidel, I don't see how it could have gotten that much gunk in the tank, I'll try disconnecting after the pump and see how much fuel I get there. I have already changed the in line filter from that tank.
Kawi600, I have the pump mounted on the frame rail with hose to the original metal lines, only the line from the line from the tank or at the tank could be sucking air.

Thanks for the ideas

Do you have a dedicated pump for the in-bed tank?

I have both tanks connected thru an electric switch to the single frame mounted pump....each tank is filtered prior to the switch.

Unless that filter is clogged, seems like you must be sucking air upstream of that tank's filter.

Sounds right XLR8R, I changed the filters right after so it has to be between the tank and the pump.
Looks like time to drop the tank!!!
Thanks

Any chance it has the algea problem? This is a bacteria that forms when conditions are just right. Usually when there is moisture in the tank and on cooler days. It WILL plud up filters and lines.

J-fox, I don't think that would be the problem, I filled up between Lordsburg N M and Tuscon AZ and had the trouble after refuel at Pilot station on I40 at the AZ-Ca line. Warm to Hot weather area at that time, August.
I've been hoping for an easy answer that didn't involve dropping the tank.
Unless it really started while back east and the near empty tank stirred some up.
