It sounds to me like it's loosing freon and freezing up. When it thaws it blows cold until it freezes up again. You have a leak, put a "sniffer" on it and find out where it is.

Run the a/c until it starts to feel moist then pop the hood and take a look at your cold line.....if it's low on freon it'll be completely covered in ice. If that's not it I would definitely check for a clog in the drain line.

nope..
but you don't have to remove the dash..well not completely..
I change my evaporator and heater cores today..PIA..but worth it..if you'd like I can post a photo of my evaporator to see how dirty it was..

I haven't taken the photo yet.
but I learned some things along the way.
to get it out..
1. loosen the 13mm nut on behind the driver and passenger kick panels
2. remove the rubber lines to the heater core.
3. remove the A/c lines to/from the evaporator.
4. drop the steering column. remove the indicator wire if its an auto.
5. remove the cover in the bottom center of the dash. then remove the 2 nuts and 2 bolts on the metal bracket.
6. remove the 5/16th nuts near the windshield that hold the dash in place.
7. move the dash out of the way. I used the strap on the passenger side and tied it up to the passenger handle. I didn't remove the entire dash.
8. remove the 10mm nut in the upper right corner of the plenum
9. remove the 10mm nut and ground strap the connect to the heater core
10. remove the TCM
11. remove the four 11mm nuts from the engine compartment. one is hiding near the rear of the cylinder head.
12. from the inside pull the plenum loose.
13. you'll find there is a vacuum line connector to disconnect near the center.
14. remove the vacuum connections. yellow, red, brown, green.
15. remove the blend door connection, the blower and the antenna wire.
16. the plenum should now be free..
Once its out..
1. remove the screws and hold it together. there is one hidden in an air channel.
2. remove the blend door motor.
3. remove the hardware and heater core..keep this if nothing is wrong.
4. split the plenum
5. remove the evaporator core..
6. replace and reassemble..BE CAREFUL with the blend door..keep it in the middle of the range with assembling the 2 halves..
7. reconnect the blend door motor.. I didn't remove this motor and had to remove the plenium twice..I had no heat.
follow the directions backwards and you should be able to get everything back together.
