A/C problem

A/C problem
My A/C has not been blowing cold air since last fall and now it's time to see about getting it fixed. With the engine running and the A/C on, the compressor? (the thing that the belt is attached to) clicks and turns for about 2 seconds and then clicks and stops turning for about 10 seconds. It stays in that pattern. Is this normal? I noticed two of the aluminum lines located between the firewall and the airbox are touching each other and have rubbed one of the lines really bad but doesn't appear to have gone all the way thru. Any ideas?

put a pressure gauge on it w/ the A/C on and motor running. It'll tell you if you're too low or too high. Either way, the A/C cycles on and off like it is for you.
See about putting some rubber hose, or something soft, between the two lines. If it's low and you fill it, add a dye-tracer can into the system so you can find the leak.
