brake squeal
Is there a cure for brake squeal? I replaced the front pads not too long ago and they were nice and quiet. But after a recent day in the mud, I've got nasty squealing brakes. I took the brakes off, cleaned the pads and rotors up to remove any tiny pebbles/dirt that might have been contributing to the noise, but I've still got some squealing. It has improved, but still pretty annoying.
Thanks.

Re:brake squeal
There's a product available at autoparts stores that you put on the BACK (metal) side of the pads. I have some at home but forget what it's called off-hand. If you ask for "brake squeal stop" they should know. Mine's a red, thick paste-like liquid that you put on, let dry and then re-assemble the brakes.
One other thing to check is the wear indicator tabs on the pads. Make sure they aren't rubbing on the rotors. If the pads are glazed at all, scuff them off lightly with some fine sandpaper.

Re:brake squeal
I too had that annoying brake squeal awhile back, I changed to the carbon metallic front pads, new rotors, new hardware kit for calipers, still the squeal was there. After driving my truck with the noise for about a week, I realized that it was my back brakes, it did sound as if it was in the front. Changed rear shoes and wheel cylinders, cureing all noise. I hope this can help someone, for I know that brake noise is annoying.

Re:brake squeal
You did not say whether you turned the rotor when you replaced the pads Many times the squeal you hear is caused by the rotor being Glazed. I would just turn the rotors when I would get this condition. Check to make sure that you do not have the emerg. brake hanging up I had this happen on my suburban once and it was costly to replace the rotors.

Forgot to mention it, I replaced both rotors at the same time as the pads. I'll get the squeal taken care of eventually, just have to find the time.
Thanks.
